Feature Friday!
We LOVE our members and would like to recognize them for all of their hard work and dedication to their health and our community. Every Friday we will feature a member and give YOU the opportunity to meet them and learn how CrossFit has changed their lives. We wouldn’t be who we are without you and we THANK YOU for your commitment to yourself and to the program.
This weeks Athlete is Crystal T!
What do you do for a living?
CT: Dental Hygienist
Why do you compete?
CT: Competitiveness is in my dna. Crossfit has given me a healthy outlet for that. Competing is fun, it’s motivating, and it gives me something specific to train for.
What was your first CrossFit experience like?
CT: Bedlam was my first CF experience. I was still living in Connecticut, vacationing in Texas, and my boyfriend Rob (professor) asked me to come try a class. I was hooked! It was so much more than just just sweating at the gym with my headphones on. It reminded me of when I swam in college; the atmosphere, the adrenaline rush, the push from people dying right beside you.
How has it changed your life? (if at all)?
CT: I was always an athlete, and after college swimming ended I never found the same connection with any other sports or activity. Crossfit, particularly Bedlam Athlete gave me that feeling I had missed. Like this is what I do, this is who I am, this is what makes me different. My college swim coach used to say, “You few here are an elite breed. You are NOT normal. Normal people are sleeping right now, while you are training.” What we do everyday isn’t normal and it definitely isn’t easy, but that’s what separates us from everyone else. We are willing to do what others won’t to be a stronger, better human. How can you not love that?!
What is your least favorite movement and why?
CT: Running. I hate it. I cannot stay calm when I run, it’s the ultimate stressor. I can’t breathe, my legs feel like 100lbs each, and my mental game gets real weak.
What else do like to do when you’re not in the gym?
CT: Work, gym, eat and sleep take up the majority of hours in the day. But on a rest day I love taking our puppy out on adventures, going out to eat, and visiting with friends. And when it’s time to ultra veg, binge watching Netflix marathons.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting CrossFit for the first time?
CT: Just try it! There’s something in it for everyone, on every level. Just showing up is more than most people are willing to do, but you’ll thank yourself! We all get the same 24 hours in a day, if it’s important to you, you’ll make time for it. All of us all have different specific goals in Crossfit, but our commonality is that we all WANT to be better, and we’re committed to putting in the hard work to get what we want.
